A Fresh Retrospective of Tiki Cocktails

WAITIKI’s original drink menu consists of cocktails crafted in the style of those by Donn Beach (of Donn The Beachcomber), Vic Bergeron (of Trader Vic’s), Mariano Licudine (of the Mai Kai) and other period mixologists whose mastery of rums and syrups propelled the tiki era to everlasting fame. Along with contributions from WAITIKI’s band members (notably Tim, Randy, and Helen), the drink menu features exclusive recipes by mixology guru Jeff “Beachbum” Berry, Brother Cleve (of Combustible Edison), and Kern Mattei (of the Mai Kai Restaurant in Fort Lauderdale, FL). Each show gets treated to its own special rotation of the drinks mentioned below!

Also visit our drink blog The Cocktail Journal for more cocktail recipes!

The Okonkulukooler (by Jeff “Beachbum” Berry)

Drank Sumatra uses this drink to strike up the band before singing about Shrunken Skulls and Rum Barrels. The Okonkulukooler is: pineapple juice, lemon juice, Chambord, white Puerto Rican rum & dark Jamaican rum.

    Wai Niu (by Kern Mattei)

Rumor has it that water coolers at the Okonulukuian Coconut Wireless Corp. HQ are filled with this coconutty delight. A light and refreshing swizzle of coconut rum, coconut water, limes, rock candy, syrup, and soda.

    Maharaja’s Revenge (by Br. Cleve)

A favorite of Old Monks and young plamingos alike. Crafted from apricot brandy, Old Monk rum, and lime juice. Shabash!

El Wongjito (by Randy Wong of WAITIKI)

A gingery concoction made famous at Okonkuluku University’s Dew Drop Inn. Order it on the rocks, if you please . . . it’s so sumptious, everything Wong will seem so right.

Kinamona’s Deelite (by Randy Wong of WAITIKI)

Wong’s Homemade Cinnamon Syrup #2 and fresh island guava juice make sweet aloha! Garnished with a sprizzle of soda, a mint sprig, and a long cinnamon stick, this drink is delightful for lovers and virgins alike.

Liko No Ka Oi (by Jeff “Beachbum Berry”)

Created with the buttery goodness of Liko Lehua ® fruit butters, the Liko No Ka Oi comes in mango, lilikoi (passion fruit), and guava flavors. One sip and you’ll be proclaiming “No Ka Oi!” (It’s the best!)

Liko Colada (by Jeff “Beachbum Berry”)

Jeff Berry’s take on the pina colada, with the silky sweetness of Liko Lehua ® coconut butter. You’re sure to wear a flower in your hair: after all, its orchid garnish needs a second home after you swizzle every last drop.

Queequeg’s Harpoon (by the F.O.M. Queequeg Chapter of New England)

New Englanders agree: Cranberries, tiki bars, and exotica are almost as Bostonian as the Red Sox themselves. Just try the Queequeg’s Harpoon, named for the character in Moby Dick who landed in New Bedford and saves Ishmael’s life. The central ingredient in the Harpoon is its Queequeg’s Blood Syrup made from cranberries, cinnamon, cloves, and other New England ingredients.

Waitiki Wai Tai (by Tim Mayer and Randy Wong of WAITIKI)

Made with good ol’ John D. Taylor, the Waitiki Wai Tai is like a regular Mai Tai, but with the substitutions of Velvet Falernum (for orgeat) and Old Monk rum (for dark rum). You need not wear tails or a white coat to enjoy this one; enjoy it anywhere Waitiki’s music is being played.

Special Cocktailology Events (sponosred by Okonkuluku University)

Thanks to WAITIKI’s partnership with the Royal Consqueezatory at Okonkuluku U., we are able to offer occasional cocktailology seminars and events led by Jeff “Beachbum” Berry. Our most recent event, the Beantown Sippin’ Safari was a wondrous success. Stay tuned for future events by signing up on our mailing list.
