About the Album
Charred Mammal Flesh: Exotic Music for BBQ is seasoned with traditional and contemporary flavors found only in the village of Okonkulukú —from the classic Denny tunes “Manila” and “Primativa” to the twisted antics of “Satyritar” and “Insomniac Food” to the wacky stories told in “March of Chief MauMau” and “Fuzzy Mammoth Breath.” WAITIKI also debuts their “Alo-hop” songs “Cave of Uldo” and “Mr. Ho’s Yummy Hut Yee-Haw.” And, as any of the villagers from Okonkulukú will attest, no WAITIKI show would be complete without everyone’s favorite song about pandas and punctuation, “Pan-XOTIK-Da.”
Charred Mammal Flesh features the zany antics of WAITIKI at full throttle. Complete with the never- before-heard sacrifice of a live watermelon, it’s the first of a new tidal wave of exotic tiki-tainment as heard at the 2005 Hukilau Festival in Florida, the 2005 Hawai’i International Jazz Festival, and in 2006 at the Festival de México (Mexico City) where the 20-piece WAITIKI “Orchestrotica” goes space-age and plays their own transcriptions of Esquivel!
Awards & Honors for Charred Mammal Flesh
In 2007, WAITIKI was duly honored by the Hawaii Music Awards Foundation when it was announced that not only was our album being nominated for an Album of the Year award, but that a category for Exotica was being made, in recognition of our work in bringing Exotica back to audiences in Hawaii and across the world. We became winners of the first-ever Exotica Album of the Year Award; possibly the first time that Exotica had ever been recognized with its own category, in any awards ceremony! Fall 2007 also brought us our first international award nomination. “Cave of Uldo”, an original composition by WAITIKI’s Randy Wong, was nominated by the Ontario Independent Music Awards (Ontario, Canada) in its category Best Song from the USA. We didn’t win that one, but were quite honored to have been nominated!
